Bryan Rutledge, a kite boarder from Syracuse sent a Groupme message to the crew that following Saturday’s session there that he was not feeling well.  Symptoms included a sour stomach, sweats, and a day later a sore throat.  Mike Allen experienced similar symptoms, following his late afternoon session, as did Doug C.  His symptoms may have been a bit more explosive.  I actually remember having a dull headache, sour stomach and mild sweats as well.

A few weeks earlier a few blue green algae blooms were reported further south on Seneca Lake, and the curiosity is, can these symptoms in any way be connected to those blooms.  The water the same as it always does, and no “pea soupy” water was to be seen.

Anybody else experience any of this?

In the lake’s defense, I did pretty much drink the whole thing.  But I agree with Doug, the water looked clean and tasted great.  Could be we are all experiencing withdrawl symptoms from an awesome session!

All kidding aside, water quality is something we should all be concerned about.  These lakes are treasure, and we need to take care of them.

I dont believe we have a serious blue-green algal issue down here at Seneca.

I have seen this toxic stuff on occasion along the wall eddies when there is no wind for weeks on end during the summer. Its unmistakable…looks like someone dumped bright blue oil paint in the water.

Most of whats along the park shore line is a mixture of rotting weeds and some algae. I think some of the serious blooms that do pop are somewhat transitory.

Well, I was pretty dialed on Saturday and didn’t spend much time in the water. But it looked quite clean to me, hardly any seaweed…much less any algae. I didn’t get in the water at the swim beach, though, so can’t speak for that site.

In prior years, the swim site has been closed, but I don’t think so this year (someone correct me?). And I think that wasn’t about algae but about coliform bacteria.

Can’t discount the possibility, but I’ve been in much scarier looking water than what we had on Saturday.
