The calendar conspired against me for so long.  The wind and weather did the same.  I was finally able to get my first windsurf session of 2019 under my belt at Canandaigua.

Leery of fickle springtime conditions, I didn’t load up until after work ended so it took me a bit longer to arrive.  En route the wind strengthened and I got word that some good company was already on the water.  Scott, Corey, and even word that Bill was on site got me pumped that I was not going to get skunked this time.

After a honk of the horn to Steve Howie who was at CDGA Sailboarding, I caught sight of Scott’s rad looking Ezzy Hydra windfoil sail.  He was gliding along next to a locked in looking Ezzy Freeride I know to be Corey D.’s 6.5.  I scurried to rig up and was met by kiter Nick A. hoping to score a rare Kershaw session with the lake empty of swimmers and boats.  A quick and hearty “what’s up?” and he was rigging his 12 and I a 6.5 Ezzy Lion3.  Nick has had a bunch of FL ocean session and was glad to be back on/in fresh water.

No Bill though.  Billy….where’d ya go???

Scott came in to put a fin on his foil board and rig an identical sail to mine while Corey kept ripping blazing passes on his 135L RRD.  Scott is the top windfoil guy around here, but it’s still nice to be glued to the water sometimes. Corey’s been putting in the work for a few years, and has his jibes coming along nicely for a windsurfer of 4 years.  It’s going to be fun to see him more on the water.

Scotty and I hopped on the water and joined Corey in an environment that was a delight for the senses…..off and on sunshine, deeply colored water, and friends in the wind.  It was a few minutes before things would line up for the three of us to sail close to each other, but the stoke was palpable.  A jaunt to the east revealed that Nick had self launched his Duotone 12m from the beach and was indeed having a Canandaigua kite session.

As will happen in spring, the wind was inconsistent, but we all made the best of it on sail and kite for the next 1.5-2 hours schlogging and ripping.  At one point I hit 25.2 mph (averaging 24.6 over 200m) on a pretty controlled first day back on the board.  Post session beers all around as we de-rigged ahead of impending rain.  Twisted Rail brewing was busy with live music and most of the parking spots were filled as a result.  We’ll have to keep an eye on that.

Scotty says Other Half Brewing is open on 5 and 20.

      Refreshed!

Wow, I didn’t realize that was your first session of the season, Doug! You’ve lost weight! No wonder you’re so fast! Yes, I remember that one pass where Corey and I were on the same rip. I was trying to test the foil speed out and compare my speed to his. Corey was definitely faster, I was on my 5.5 Hydra Ezzy and he on a 6.5 Ezzy.  He was dialed in nicely for variable conditions and the extra float helped him through the lulls, but I did my fair share of slogging waiting for puffs, especially waiting for the forecast to kick in while on foil.

It was nice getting a session in at my old sailing grounds before the busy season of swimmers and boats. I got a kick out of foiling over the double wave chop reflecting off the pier on my way to Squaw Island, (not a very PC name for an island). Maybe we’d should call it tiny island where boat propellers and windsurfer fins meet their match. But not in high spring water!!!

Fun being out with fellow sharks! And Nick!
