So last weekend, there wasn’t any wind (grrr), which led us to a paddle around Howland Island on the Seneca River / NYS Barge Canal. Have done this route a few times before, but always in summer with the weeds and reeds really high. Very difficult paddle with weeds grabbing your canoe and paddle. Much better in spring, with very high water, no weeds, and the reeds sufficiently died down so that you have a great view of the surroundings (in late summer it’s more like paddling down a green corridor).

Highlight of the day were sightings of: Sandhill Cranes, Emporer Swans, and Caspean Terns. All very gorgeous and graceful large birds. I would mention the Bald Eagles, but they’ve become so numerous in this area that they’re amazing to see and watch but no longer the standouts they were when I first started having encounters with them.

Circumnavigation of Howland Island in a canoe or kayak. Highly recommended on a no-wind day.

      GEM
