Since we are prohibited from using the beach at Seneca Lake State park when it is open for swimming, I had a chance this Sunday to test out launching kites from the point just south of the beach that the park manager recently upgraded. I was joined in evaluating the new site by Dustin, Don, Todd, and Cyrus and Mike as we rode the middle on 12m to 14m in straight South wind most of the day. As assisted land-launches are impractical at the site, we experimented with assisted water-launches. Since there are a couple of new amply wide pathways at the point unobstructed by vegetation, we found success walking the kite straight into the water on those pathways for the hooked-in rider with lines trailing on the ground or with lines re-wound on the bar. Seaweed was not much of a problem, nor was there significant rotor effect from the trees on the straight South wind. Rotor effect may be more of a problem with Southwest flow however. The water was shallow enough far enough away from the trees for the person tending the kite to tip in on its side for a relatively easy water launch. If we can get the park to add more sand/gravel to cover the trip-hazard rocks on the end of the point, tether launches may be feasible on a straight South in the future. With ample shaded lawn areas to rig and store kites, and restrooms and parking close by, assisted water launches (or solo drift launches) at the point look like a winner when the swimming beach is open and closed to kites. Check it out…maybe we can get Brad to be our beach b**ch and tend our kites on the weekends…see you on the water.

Sounds good. Not sure they can introduce aggregate to the lake without an Armycorps permit.

Hello Guys and gals!  From the great Hatteras Beaches and southern hospitality! I do miss all of you but I will have to admit, it is WAY BETTER SAILING  here on the outer banks…I do not even count the days as there are so many… Now, this is coming from a guy who lived in the GORGE for almost 3 years and I am telling you that HATTERAS is better all the way around for consistent and big wind!!!!! Come on down and visit for awhile….my house is only two lots from the water and within 5 min from the ocean!!  Jimmy is finally HOME!!!
