Tom and Richard, there are always wings out when the wind blows. It be good to come to one of the sites and talk directly to the guys. I windsurf foil and don’t wing but have tried it.

Four major local sites that the Rochester wingers and other sailors sail are: WNW to NE winds, Durand Beach and Montana Beach (Seabreeze Pier at Irondeqouit Outlet), SE to S winds, Seneca and Canandaigua Lakes, WSW wind Long Pond.

Also there is a Facebook page called Western NY Sailboard, Kiting etc, which have a number of followers, many from the Buffalo area but Rochester too.

      Good Luck!

      Guard in place

Here is the final product, sanded, painted and epoxied in place. I used a thickened epoxy to glue it on. I like the way it turned out!

We knew this day was coming! So sad. But you are off to new adventures and maybe some great sailing! Hope to see you on Sunday. Or maybe we should get one last sail….forecast to blow 10-20 S!

Hope you get some. Traveling out of town…no sailing for me. Never fails. Leave town and the wind blows! EVERY TIME! Make sure to stop at Red Dove for beer and eats after sailing. A favorite spot of locals.

Like I said, that was windsurfing candy! And it was great sailing into the dark with you guys. Slamming gibes at full speed in the flat water by the west end break wall was exhilarating all while the sun was dropping below the hillside. As I sailed I back and forth a quick glance toward shores also revealed a micro brew pub at one end, Young Lion and another at the east end, Twisted Rail! So to finish the session with a legendary Heady Topper NEIPA…well that just putting a cherry on top. Thanks Corey! (note: you have to go to Vermont to guy this stuff it’s not widely distributed!)

Oh, almost forgot. Yes there was another session earlier at Seneca! Teddy, Joe and I sailed overpowered on 4.8-5.5’s in some really great swell. It just kept ramping up til I started missing a bunch of gibes so we called it quits but knew Corey and Doug would be heading to Daigua so session number two was an easy call. Great fun guys.

Wow! Intense session. Great video close-ups. The waves crashing over wall in back ground make for a great dramatic vibe!

Geoff, this is great stuff! Very valuable information. I could read this technical windsurfing tuning stuff all day long. Hope you write more for us.

I’ve read most of Eric’s technical articles on his blog and found it very helpful. I have been playing with my boom height adjustments this year and can relate to your observations. Thanks!

Oooh…sorry I missed it! Can be sure that when I leave town the wind will blow! Glad everyone had fun. I’m back so let the wind blow!

Geoff, I was trying to get this post past the admin., should have elaborated more about the parallel I though I saw in this article about wide skis hurting your knees. In short, the more upright stance wide skis skiers often adopt and the upright stance I often find myself using on foil make the knee less able to withstand some the loads placed on it. As I understand it a flexed knee is better supported by the muscles and ligaments surrounding it. My layman’s interpretation of the situation! Then again maybe I’m just getting old, cause everything hurts! lol

PS good advice on fin, I was looking at an MFC Liquid Pro similar to sweep fin you mentioned.

A long awaited Dougie post! Yay! That was sooo much fun. The wind was steady everywhere so I disappeared over the horizon for a bit! You know how your mind is constantly narrating a story when you alone on your board….well at one point Dora the Explorer was singing “OH CANADA!”

Love your tracking app and the way it is color coded to your speed, turning red as you slow down in the jibes and green and yellow as you speed up. The Goya Bolt held up to the chop well and a recent session on Seneca with a weed fin and noted increased jibe performance leads me to believe that if I ditch the slalom fin my jibes will immensely be improved by a wavier fin profile.

I think I did catch a glimpse of you near the shore in front of the mega homes but once I hit my jibe at the mouth of the river I high tailed it home rocketing off the wind and made it home in three to four reaches! I don’t think I’ve ever gone that fast on the Bolt, it was actually a bit scary except that all I had to do was take my foot off the throttle to calm down!

One of the advantages of foiling is that it get you out in the marginal conditions and if it suddenly ramps unexpectedly say due to a thermal, your in the right spot for a nice sesh!

Looks like a cool toy. Would love to see it in action. Post on Groupme next time you take it out! I’ve seen videos and would love to see it in action. I’ve heard Bay Creek in Roch. is getting a demo wing, a Naish I think.

Nooo! Great to see you Big E! Wish I’d checked your site for this forecast. I often just wing it. In fact it was only because of a case of insomnia that I got up early and hit the beach. When I got to Durand it was 5.3-5.7, by the time I posted it was 6.1. I tried that and it dropped more. So I put up the 6.5 Lion on the Goya Free Race (which hasn’t seen many regular sessions as it’s my foil board as well), and it was rocking! I came in for a break and it just shut down! That’s summer for you. On my way home I drove by South Irondeqoiut Bay and it was thermaling. Met Jason and Gary there and we all foiled!! Jason foiled his kite there. I believe that would be a first! At the very south it is weedy and it take some patience but farther upwind it was weed free. Early Morning Bump

Awesome Eric ! Already watched one and can’t wait to watch them all. Love your presentation skills and your willingness to share your knowledge. I’ve always been frustrated by picking boards for our local conditions. I know you have sailed our Rochester area sites and you have to admit they are different than Erie. We get tons of chops. I’d like to replace my 85 liter board and just might try a Stubby! Thanks!
